Ephesians | Walk as Wise

Transition:

We are continuing our look into Paul’s practical teaching about how Christians are to live as followers of Jesus (which he likens to a walk). The last two weeks we have considered both how to walk in love and how to walk as children of light.

Context:

This week Paul tells the Christians at the church in Ephesus to walk as wise.

Opening Questions:
• What is your definition of wisdom? How does a person become wise? What is your way of determining if someone is wise or not?
• When have you benefited from wisdom? (It doesn’t matter whether it was your own or someone else’s.) Share the story and what you learned in the process.

Scripture/Storying: 5:15-21

Discipleship Questions:

• After reading this passage, what makes a walk wise and what makes a walk foolish?
• How do you rate your own walk of faith (0=foolish, 10=wise)? What is your basis for giving yourself this rating? What practical steps are you currently taking to increase in wisdom?
• Why does Paul mention being filled with the Spirit in the context of not getting drunk with wine? What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit? How does a person become filled with the Spirit? When have you been aware of being filled with the Spirit yourself? Tell the group about your experience.
• Why does Paul tell the Ephesians to address one another with singing? What does this look like in a practical sense? When has singing with other believers had a powerful influence on your walk with the Lord?
• How do being thankful and singing from the heart go hand-in-hand? How do you do this yourself?
• How do Christians go about submitting to one another? What are some real-life examples?
• How are walking in love, walking as children of light, and walking as wise distinctively separate ideas? How do they work together as one?
• What has the Holy Spirit revealed to you about your walk with Jesus and how He wants you to respond?

Prayer time:

This week we are praying for KARM (Knox Area Rescue Ministries), a ministry that Providence supports.
• Please pray for the expansion and renovation of our women’s program. Our administrative offices have moved off campus to make room for this expansion of women’s services.
